Change For My Organization
I think that while my organization is working quite well, one of the things that I would like to change is the chaos around the way in which the children switch around classrooms. The kids move around for science, social studies, and reading, but have their particular place for their homeroom. Every day when they are to leave for the subject of topic, they are supposed to grab that book, go and get their binder for that class and then go. But, they all grab things so fast, make a huge mess around the room and some even forget certain things that they are supposed to grab. So, while the children are learning social studies, a kid will come into the classroom, interrupting, to grab their binder or book that they forgot for their other class. In my mind, I think it would be so much easier if things were better organized. Perhaps, the teacher that has science, leaves all the science books in her classroom. Also, the science binders that the kids need should just stay in the science class that they need to be in. There could be a binder that the children bring for their homework binder only. If they need anything to take home that night, put it in that one binder. This binder applies to all classroom activities though, and all your homework from every subject would go in that binder. The information and books that they need for social studies, science and reading all just stay in the classroom where these things are taught for each child. Things get too chaotic and the children interrupt class time and I have always just thought this was not the most productive way of doing things.

I remember when I was in elementary school and we had to switch classrooms the same way. Many kids forgot items they needed and it became a bother to have to get them from another classroom. I think that your way of organization works out way better than if the students had to move from classroom to classroom bringing all of their belongs with them. Not only would this way of organizing the student be more efficient but it would also cut down on the interruption time of other classes too. It must be very difficult to always have students interrupting your class because of forgotten materials. This system seems like it would work, you should suggest it to the school staff and see what their thoughts about it are. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteHi Shelby, I remember how it was going from classroom to classroom for different studies when i was young. I agree that kids should have separate binders for each subject. In my case doing that in the past not only kept my subjects neat but avoided confusion. I think the teachers should also collaborate on with each other on this matter. Having good communication is crucial in order to smoth them into the next subject. I have noticed that when subjects seg way into each other there is less confusion. I would usually say it would be better to keep them all in one classroom, but i think its good for them to get up and move around during the day. This will help them pay attention better going into the next subject.
ReplyDeleteShelby,
ReplyDeleteI student taught with my cousin for a week in her 5th grades classroom at the beginning of the year, and boy do I know what you are talking about. I really like your suggestion because I think that would cut down on all the choatic classroom behavior that goes on when kids are switching for their other subjects, but what if they needed the books for homework? My other question is why aren't the books kept in their lockers? This is where all my books were kept when I was in school, and we always had 5 minutes between electives to grab them. Angelia DeSanzo
Your organizational idea seems very logical and would definitely benefit both the teachers and the students. Having a set of books in the each subjects respective classroom makes a lot of sense. In terms of the binders having a homework binder for all subjects is a very good idea. This would actually increase the organizational skills of the students so that each subject has its place within the binder. An issue I recall having is when you needed a book for homework and by only having a class set, you may not have enough for every student. Then you could consider a take home set of books but that depends on the schools budget for books. Jason makes a great point about having communication between the teachers in every subject is great. If you are able to relate social studies with reading or science with social studies it makes the learning experience that much greater. But you have great ideas that will definitely benefit the school, and that is something any organization should look into.
