Hello everyone! My name is Shelby. My applied study is at an Elementary school and I help teach fifth graders. The school is in Tucson, where I work and live. The children are so sweet and fun to be around. My area of concentration is organizational studies. I have really enjoyed having this area. I have done a lot with Political Science which is an interesting topic for today's economy. I also have taken several religion courses and communication courses. I am a person that really has enjoyed all of these classes. I am glad that I was able to broaden my knowledge and not focus in on one general field of study.
I chose the Elementary School as my site because I have always questioned whether or not I want to be a teacher. The main thing that deters me away is the pay. Another reason is because I really enjoy business type courses and have always been interested in marketing and management. I thought that this would be a good time to look into teaching and determine if I want to get my teaching certificate or continue with my plan of getting an MBA and working in a related field. Since I began teaching, I have already learned several things from the children. One is that I need to discipline them, or they will never take me seriously. Also, they respect the teachers that tend to keep them in line. I have also learned that my passion for teaching and children is higher than I had previous thought.
My future goal is to get my MBA through ASU, and begin working in a marketing firm or PR. However, I think that either before this or after, I want to get my teaching certificate and become a teacher. I look forward to this applied study. I have very much enjoyed it thus far and it is still in the early stages. I know that the teacher I am working with will slowly gain my trust and allow me to take larger steps towards running the class room. I think this is going to be a great experience for me, and something that I have always wanted to accomplish.

Hi Shelby,
ReplyDeleteYou seem like quite a busy person! I know you said one of your concentration areas is organizational studies, but what is your other area? Teaching and marketing are almost on opposite ends of the spectrum, it will be interesting to see which one you like better. My areas of concentration are business, with an emphasis in marketing, and communications. My applied study site is with an organization that provides music education to children and adults of all ages. If you decide you really enjoy teaching, but still really want to be involved in the business side of things it might be helpful to look into non-profit education programs that help lower privileged children. Its fun and challenging to create new ways of marketing with a very low budget, I’ve learned a lot just in these past few weeks from my applied site. You will be quite diverse with a teaching certificate and a MBA. Good luck!
Hi Shelby,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are torn into two different directions - will you become a teacher or will you get your MBA and go into marketing and PR. I hope that through this internship you will be able to learn if teaching is the right field for you or not. If you love teaching then maybe that is the best direction of you, but if its not your cup of tea then an MBA sounds like it might be the right path.
Shelby, your applied study seems to happen at the right time. It is allowing you to find a potential path before graduating. Working with Student Media has also given me the chance to find my true calling. I was never really sure what I had wanted to do after college, but being able to produce a sports broadcast has given me this opportunity. I have also been able to test my leadership skills as a director. I found the marketing classes at ASU to be very enlightening. It made me think of looking into advertising. I wish you good luck in finding you true career path.
ReplyDeleteHey Shelby! My name is Brian. I'm glad your teaching experience has started off well...beware of the honey moon period! I learned about this during summer camp at a Tempe community center the past couple years. Disciplining students initially is extremely important because it sets the tone for the year. Strict rule enforcement is more difficult to employ after the first weeks of school. I have bounced around in fields and courses of interest at ASU but I feel that in today's world, versatility is key. Most employers have to respect someone with many skills.
